Finding our place in the hierarchy of ‘campers’

It has been sometime since my last confession.  Basically due to my energies being focussed on more basic needs.  It must be at least 15 years since Ian and I last went camping and it is taking a while to slide back into the rhythm of it.

We left Bordeaux and headed for a campsite in La Rochelle. We picked a small campsite (with only basic amenities) so that we could put up the tent and inflate our air bed etc without too much attention on our swearing and scratching of heads!

The next day we cycled into La Rochelle and what a great town it is, sadly I appear to have mainly taken pictures of the cake shops and coffee shops!

Feeling more confident in our camping abilities after two nights we moved on to a posher busier campsite near Saumur overlooking the Loire.  The Loire is a beautiful river and we had a lovely evening sitting on a terrace at the camp while I drank Saumur -( which was the wine of our wedding 32 years ago!)

from this campsite upgrade we learnt several things to bear in mind

1. Small camp small price (15 euros) large camp large price (45 euros)

2. Small camp – short walk to toilet block in the night…….large camp…….

3. Check if campsite is more for caravans…….we were like the thorn between two roses……well actually we were the only thorn in a bloody massive rose bouquet!  We provided entertainment for the caravanners as they sipped their Pimms from underneath their perfectly erected awnings while we sweated and toiled to put up our little tent in temperatures over 30C!

Slept well though – you can’t hear the snoring from fellow campers so easily through the caravan walls.

Have now arrived at a friends house for two nights in a proper bed. Luxury.
